If you have not seen “White Noise” yet, then I wouldn’t suggest wasting your money on seeing it. Although it has gained a good boost from the professional reviewing community, I think that this is one of the slowest, most drug out suspense movies that I have ever seen. The plot is alright in parts, and Michael Keaton does a good job of acting, but it felt like a complete rip off of “The Sixth Sense” in the way it presented itself. If you don’t believe me, then check out their tagline for the movie: “The dead are trying to get a hold of you.” The only difference is Keaton heard the dead people via electronic devices and didn’t see them through the ghastly appearances.
The movie is pretty boring for the first half, where it sets up the overly dramatic death of Keaton’s missus (played by Chandra West). We then get to see Keaton mope around for a while, and try to move on with his life until he meets someone who claims to have contacted his wife through EVP. And although he doesn’t believe in it, a series of coincidences lead him to get ahold of the person who offered his professional help in contacting his wife. The rest of the movie is focused on Keaton’s obsession with EVP and how it messes up his life. Of course, there was the classic plot twist thrown in a little over half way through the movie. In this case, it made Keaton turn into a prophesying hero who could see some local events before they happened and then would attempt to go and save those people. Let me just say, that to me and my friends, it felt like a flashback to “Batman”.
Although it was very nice to see Michael Keaton in a major acting role again, it was very sad to see him take part in such a disappointing movie. Maybe during Hollywood’s sequel crazy phase which we seem to be trapped in, there will be a “Multiplicity 2”; although I doubt it would be anywhere near great, it has to be better than the disappointment called “White Noise”.
