The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

3/5 stars

I will make no defensive statement on this one, because I didn't pay and it seems like I'm always defending why I see movies. I saw it cause it looked entertaining and friends were going. And we were right, it was entertaining and it wasn't all that bad.

Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a naive young woman, who is just out of college and looking to make it as a Journalist in New York City. She somehow scores an interview with a fashion magazine, Runway, who is lorded over by the industries biggest name, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). It's clear that Andy doesn't fit in (she has no fashion sense, no style, and doesn't care about it anyway), but lands the job. The movie revolves around her trying to make it in a "foreign world of fashion" and trying to balance that overly demanding job with her personal life.

Meryl Streep is amazing in this film. She doesn't just play the part, but she makes you believe that she is the part. Her sly smirks, the noncholant way of commanding people like they are pawns on her chessboard, and just her way of carrying herself is amazing. If I was judging the movie on her performance alone, it would get all 5 stars. Sadly, I can't do that so it won't get them all.

Anne Hathaway plays her part fairly well, but it isn't a surprise. She always plays the part of the nerdy girl who get's a makeover and then is beautiful. She plays the naive nerd very well and the uptight priss fairly well also. But it would be amazing if she would do a movie where she looks one way the entire time. Yes, people restylize their looks fairly often, but so many actors look the same for the duration of at least one film, that I'd enjoy seeing her try the same.

The other person who really stands out in this film is Stanley Tucci (as Nigel, Miranda's second hand man). He embodies the part perfectly and is amazing. The other actors/actresses do well, but just play background or average roles. Nothing too extraordinary.

Despite everything good, it just left me feeling kinda weird. In the end she throws her job away and has no reprecusions for doing so. In fact, it lands her a job she actually wants. She dumps her boyfriend, sleeps with her writing idol, and then gets her boyfriend back without any hangups. It doesn't happen like this. And if it somehow does in New York, then I guess I'll head there after graduation. I could use a makeover.

It was worth the watch (and review), but it seemed very typical in today's movie world. Maybe it's because we've seen most of it before. But hey, it took two hours of my life away without me even checking my watch. There aren't too many movies these day's that have that holding power anymore.
