Imagine if the original “American Pie” had actually captured the real high school environment… the language, the obsession with sex and party’s, the immaturity, the disrespect, and the inflated egos. Then imagine that people who were actually teens (or at least look like it) were cast in that movie. And just for kicks, make sure the cast is relatively unknown and the writers are actually decent at crafting realistic dialogue. Do those three things, and throw in some hilarious penis-art, and you have “Superbad,” the latest comedy from Judd Apatow and the hilarious cast and crew which seems to follow him to whatever project he decides to produce.
The film follows three socially inept friends, Seth, Evan, and Fogell, through one of their last days of high school and the insane experience they have while trying to buy alcohol for a graduation party they otherwise wouldn’t have been invited to. In the process of buying the alcohol, Fogell, whose fake ID says that he is “McLovin,” a 25 year old organ donor, is knocked out by someone robbing the liquor store, and is soon partying with a couple of crazy cops. Meanwhile, Seth and Evan try to get the alcohol they promised to bring; what makes it even more hectic is the fact that they have crushes on the girls they’re buying for and are hoping this will impress them enough to date them.
Although I found this film to be extremely hilarious, I don’t recommend it for everyone; especially because they’re attitudes towards women is pretty ignorant and disrespectful. Although the movie is supposed to show they’re progression from chauvinist teens to more respectful young adults, it comes off as having too much fun with the chauvinist teen aspect of the movie. Then again it is a comedy flick, so I really didn’t expect any deep, philosophical message to be underneath all the penis jokes and crude sexual humor.
However, for the more immature, especially those who try to conceal their inner teen with a professional veneer, this movie will make your day, week, and maybe even month. I just wouldn’t recommend quoting most of the jokes at work.
