This movie marked the end of a three year hiatus taken by Harrison Ford. As a long time fan of his, I can assure you that it was very nice to see him in a new movie. Firewall wasn't the best film to mark his return to the industry, but it definitly isn't the worst.
Jack Stanfield (Harrison Ford) is the Vice President of Security at Landrock Pacific Bank. As the movie opens, we see people spying on his work, home, and private/public life... going through his garbage for info... and obviously planning to take him or his family hostage. When it happens, they use him to break into his own bank (via computers) and steal the money for them. If he is successful, his family will be unharmed. If he doesn't follow the rules and/or fails, they'll start breaking knees and shooting skulls. So, as he is trying to steal the money, he's plotting ways to escape without them knowing, or to at least get his family out of harms way.
Honestly, the first half of the movie is pretty amazing. When the bad guys show up, they rock. Bill (the leader) stays calm and still comes across crazy as hell, and every step that Jack makes to get help, they're there to stop him and remind him of the "rules" and consequences if he doesn't obey them. But as it goes on, that gets a little repetitive. And as their plans are found out to be complicated by problems at the bank, it goes downhill.
The second half of the movie becomes very typical for action movies. It becomes obvious that they are using Jack because they can really make it look like he took all the movie and when they're done with him they can kill him and his family, get rid of the bodies, and it will look like they ran off with the money for good. The acting was alright. The fight scenes were reminiscent of old Harrison Ford movies (especially Blade Runner). And really, it feels like the director just got tired of the project and threw the second half together and came up with an ending in a fit of frustration (in other words, the ending sucks).
If you aren't a big Harrison Ford fan, then its not a must see movie. I'm still trying to figure out what the title Firewall has to do with anything in the film (a firewall isn't even mentioned once). But it's definitly not the worst movie in the world. Every now and then its nice to watch an action movie and just let your brain rot with the hole filled plot. At least this plot didn't have so many holes in it.
